This dashboard displays a high level overview of the university faculty and staff by employee classification, faculty by type, faculty by tenure status, faculty by academic rank and faculty by full time or part time status. Information is available by both headcount and FTE count. Users will be able to view the information in either chart or table format.

Additional Information

The dashboard includes “on leave without pay” employees. The filter empl_exclude_from_ipeds_flg = “N” is utilized for all data on the dashboard. 

Year is based on the October UNC System Office HR snapshot. As an example, 2023 is based on the information reported in October of the 2023 calendar year.

Temporary student workers were not included within the population of this visual.

Definitions

Faculty Type (NC State)
Faculty Type (NC State) is an NC State categorization of faculty members based on their tenure status and career track. Faculty with a tenure status of ''Tenured'' or ''Not Tenured but on Tenure-Track'' are classified as ''Faculty, Tenured/Tenure-Track.'' Faculty members with a tenure status of ''Not on a Tenure Track'' or ''Phased Retirement'' are classified as ''Faculty, Professional.''

Staff (NC State)
Staff (NC State) is an NC State category of employees inclusive of ''Administrators,'' ''Exempt from the State Human Resources Act (EHRA),'' ''Subject to the State Human Resources Act (SHRA),'' ''Graduate Assistants,'' ''Postdoctoral Scholars,'' and ''Temporary Staff,'' but excludes ''Faculty.'' Employees are categorized as ''Temporary Staff'' only if they do not otherwise fall into the ''EHRA,'' ''SHRA,'' ''Graduate Assistants,'' or ''Postdoctoral Scholars'' categories.

Full Time (Employee, NC State)
Full Time (Employee, NC State) is an NC State category of employees who work 30 or more hours per week (or greater than or equal to 0.75 FTE).

Part Time (Employee, NC State)
Part Time (Employee, NC State) is an NC State category of employees who work fewer than 30 hours per week (or less than 0.75 FTE).

Academic Rank (UNC System)
Academic Rank (UNC System) is a UNC System hierarchical classification of faculty members. Values include ''Professor,'' ''Associate Professor,'' ''Assistant Professor,'' ''Instructor,'' ''Lecturer,'' ''Other,'' and ''None.''

Employee Classification (NC State)
Employee Classification (NC State) is an NC State categorization of employees based on certain legal, policy, and role type classifications. Values include ''Administrators,'' ''Faculty,'' ''Exempt from State Human Resources Act (EHRA),'' ''Subject to State Human Resources Act (SHRA),'' ''Graduate Assistants,'' ''Postdoctoral Scholars,'' and ''Temporary Staff.''

Tenure Status
Tenure Status designates whether an individual faculty member has ''Permanent Tenure,'' is ''Not Tenured but on Tenure Track,'' is ''Not on a Tenure Track,'' or is in ''Phased Retirement.'' Non-faculty employees have a tenure status of ''None.''

Employee
Employee is an individual who is formally hired by the institution to perform specific job functions or tasks. Employees work under the direction and control of the institution or its employees. Employees can include faculty, staff, administrators, and other individuals engaged in various roles within the institution. This designation excludes contractors and consultants.

FTE Count (Employee)
FTE Count (Employee) is a fractional count of employees based on each employee's workload (i.e. standard work hours) relative to a full-time workload (i.e. 40 hours per week). When aggregated, this measure is typically in decimal format and a sum of each employee's FTE value. For example, a full-time employee is 1.0 FTE whereas a part-time employee working 20 hours per week is 0.5 FTE.

Headcount (Employee)
Headcount (Employee) is a whole-number count of employees where each employee is counted as one, regardless of full-time/part-time workload.

Administrators (NC State)
Administrators (NC State) is an NC State employee classification where primary job responsibilities fall within the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code series, 11-0000 (Management Occupations) with EHRA type SAAO (Senior Academic and Administrative Officer) Tier 1 or 2. Employees who fall into the Administrator category and another category, for example Faculty, are counted in the Administrator category.

Faculty (NC State)
Faculty (NC State) is an NC State employee classification defined in university policy and regulation. This employment status is designated by Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes of Postsecondary Teachers (code 25-1000) or Librarians (code 25-4020) with EHRA Faculty employment classification regardless of tenure status. Job categories (JCAT) include ''Professor,'' ''Associate Professor,'' ''Assistant Professor,'' ''Instructor,'' ''Lecturer,'' ''Field Faculty,'' ''Librarian,'' or ''Library Professional'' as outlined in NCSU POL 05.20.01. This definition excludes graduate assistants, post-doctoral scholars, and writers in residence staff.
